Best of luck to Ars in this!

Accessing via cellular here. Also, comment voting seems disabled. Related, methinks?

As fresh side thought, will various discussions and panels be streamed or recorded?

Best wishes!

I'll have to watch from across the pond.
I miss the Ars UK meetings in London…

[Edit:] I'm not seeing anything in the article or event site, but I assume the panels will be (live)streamed?
I hope so, but it does not sound like it, from what I can read in the article. Unless I missed something…

Quick Poll (completely unscientific)

I am attending the Ars Technica Conference and hope to come away

1. Empowered

2. With a signed copy of Lift-Off

3. Mission Patch giveaway from Jennifer

4. One of Lee's unused Soylent Packets

5. A maggot or tomato plant growing from my eyeball

:D

6. Slightly used Russian ex-military hardware, sold for scrap, proceeds to go to the Slava Ukraini Defense Fund?

😉

6. Attend Dr. Mole’s special symposium in that abandoned grain silo on the edge of town. The one they find all those dead shelter dogs in every solstice.

I'm assuming that it is from this:

The week of the event, we’ll be kicking things off with a series of virtual streaming chats that take place from May 9 through May 11. These streams will be free for anyone to watch online, and we’ll be sure to promote them here and on social media as they approach.

Yeah, I saw those 'preliminary' streams, that's why I initially assumed the main event would be livestreamed. But there's nothing mentioned about that.

I have every reason to believe that this would indeed be a very interesting event, especially with Gallagher's participation.

Sadly, without mention of heavy drinking and wild orgies, I'm afraid I'll have to pass.
Good news everyone, Zippy has agreed to host the afterparty!

Washington, DC is a famous city but it's skewed somewhat closer to the east coast of the country. Might I suggest somewhere near the geographical centre of the continental United States next time? Surely this will not be the final Frontier. Or failing that, I hear Honolulu is lovely this time of year.

As someone will surely remark on, we need to remember that the US isn't the center of mass for all of the posters Ars has, and D.C. might be the best choice for everyone to have equal chance to attend.

Not that I would argue much about the next convention being held somewhere around Boca Chica. Say... Around the time slated for Starship to fly?

events like this are about networking, and DC is the centre of the US when it comes to the sort of crowd Conde Nast is interested in marketing to. presumably next year's event might be somewhere in Silicon Valley.

i'm also interested in whether the main programme will be livestreamed though. aside from people who live outside the US, i'd imagine that would be an obvious thing to do for a conference covering climate change (reducing travel, etc).

Number 4 is out of the question. None were unused.

To be fair, let's not forget the huge contingent of Ars fans from Europe.

I actually think practically very roughly half of Ars readers come from that world region!

FWIW, I'm in Canada. Sometimes airfares are weird though. One thing I noticed is that sometimes it's cheaper for me to fly transcontinentially to Vancouver on an ultra-low airfare airline, than to fly to DC (for as little as USD 50 dollars Toronto-Vancouver(Abbotsford) via Swoop Airlines) -- because I couldn't find an ultra low airfare airline between Toronto and DC. But I know many Americans can fly to DC for relatively cheap, sometimes via alternate airports such as Baltimore, then do a train (Acela) hop. YAMMV. ("A" for air miles, of course).
