>One of our Road to Frontiers virtual streams will be about cryptography and privacy, featuring Lesley Carhart, director of incident response for North America at Dragos. Carhart's stream will set the table for the conference and help walk us all through the challenges of keeping things secure in an increasingly connected world.

If you're even a little interested in security and incident response / forensics, Lesley is awesome and very much worth the watch.

I found the inclusion of the "right to repair" discussion somewhat out of place with the other topics. All of the main topics of the conference seem to concern critical issues. Somehow I don't think the future of civilization hinges on whether we can replace batteries in our electronic devices.

"Right to repair" is about much more than replacing batteries. Ask any farmer about repairing a modern tractor or combine.

I asked this when the conference was announced, but I’d still like a little more detail on what “COVID restrictions will be in effect” actually means.

“Everyone has to be vaccinated and boosted and prove it, and take a proctored/verifiable Covid test within 48 hours of the event, and masks are strongly encouraged when not eating or drinking.”

I would argue that masks should be required rather than strongly encouraged to be most on point, but the above is what is in the invite.

Or, if the plight of the farmer feels too distant for you, wonder about your own vehicle.

Agreed. But I still argue that that is a marketplace issue and not one that will affect the future in any significant way.

Really? You could argue that repairing is the most effective and efficient form of recycling.

Your point is valid.

I would love to go but I cannot. Anyway these talks can to be uploaded in a podcast feed for ArsTechnica subscribers?

Your answer is in the article(s).

Where? It says the prelude chats will be streamed, but says nothing about streaming the in-person panels or why they cannot be streamed.

@Lee

Some suggestions

1. Pick some of the funniest comments or quips, with the date & without the poster's name & put them on t-shirts as a raffle giveaway.

2. Pen with a liquid/bubble top 1/2. Baby moonshark goes up & down
(I'd emailed Aurich on this a long time ago & he may still have the details)

3. Autographed posters by the staff, from some of the best work from Aurich & Trevor

It's only 150 people, so man up & sign them for good karma :)
Also improved muscle tone (on one arm) before the conference

The John Deere logo is pound for pound more expensive than platinum. It raises the cost of any part by 300%.

Well, right now it's preventing the Russians from using any of the farming equipment they stole from Ukraine

Any chance of attending electronically to the main event? As much as I'd like to be there, crossing the pond for a single day conference seems neither reasonable nor responsible...

If not I'll be grateful for the livestreams mentioned in the days leading up to the event. They'll be great too, I'm sure!
Yeah, I was going to say the same. It's a shame, but there's no way I could justify flying to the US for a one day event.

I am hoping that the sessions will be recorded and made available after the event. Please?

Its kinda sad that machine learning discussing is usally limited to bias and getting rid of that when its possible to speak about ML security or the lack of that.

There is also no S in ML, since one can steal, fake and abuse ML models like its 1990. Basically it comes down to input handling, if an attacker can influence the input data, you can make your chatbot speak extremist. You can steal the ML model with less effort than to train a new one by asking probing questions and deliberately poison it to change the answers to what you want.

Some videos about the topics :

I think that is the answer. The previous article also said “While this will be an invite-only event, several of the sessions will be livestreamed on Twitter.”

Perhaps it might be worth attending to ask that question of the panel!

Somehow I don't see: *Let's keep f---ing consumers just in case Russia attacks* as an acceptable defense for keeping the status quo.

Off topic, but when was the last time Lee got a haircut? He’s got a definite grunge look going!
I actually just got a slight trim last week! Took the length up from from "Dave Grohl" to "Keanu Reeves." But prior to that, my last haircut was pre-pandemic, in Nov 2019.

I asked this when the conference was announced, but I’d still like a little more detail on what “COVID restrictions will be in effect” actually means.
All attendees and speakers need to show proof of vaccination + booster at the door, and also need to bring a negative COVID test taken in the last 48 hours. (We'll have a pile of test kits for folks who can't conveniently test because of travel.) No booster, no entry. No negative test, no entry.

I am hoping that the sessions will be recorded and made available after the event. Please?
I am told that is what will be happening, yes. Will see if I can get confirmation as to exactly how things will be available.

Enjoy the conference (for those able to attend)

1. Someone posting online, looks a lot different in real life & people are usually very nice

2. This is not the Oscars......refrain from yelling "Keep MY comment out of your ***** mouth..."

3. When at a loss for words at meeting a real life Arsian..... simply raise one eyebrow & right hand in Vulcan greeting.......

:)

Friendly reminder.

Do not reply to spam. Quotes will remain after the original is deleted.

If you can do so, report it by mousing over and clicking the yellow triangle in the bottom right corner. (I think this requires a paid ars account.)
No need, I was already keeping an eye on the thread and just nuked it, but thanks.
